Tensions have risen in Homa Bay Town ahead of the planned Homa Bay Linda Mwananchi Rally. Two journalists were reportedly injured as businesses and transport services faced disruption.

AFP journalists Fred Ooko and his colleague Brian Ongoro were reportedly attacked while covering the situation in Homa Bay Town.

A group of armed individuals carrying crude weapons confronted the two journalists. During the incident, they seized their press identification cards, driving licences, cameras, and other personal belongings.

A boda boda rider intervened and helped the journalists escape after they were dragged along the road and beaten with clubs, according to reports.

Following the incident, Ooko and Ongoro reported the matter at Homa Bay Police Station.

Businesses and Transport Disrupted

Armed groups reportedly blocked several roads leading into Homa Bay Town, bringing parts of the town to a standstill.

The disruption has affected businesses and public transport, with motorists forced to seek alternative routes to navigate around the affected areas.

Several churches also remained closed amid heightened tensions in the area ahead of the planned political rallies.

Linda Mwananchi Leaders in Suba South

The Linda Mwananchi campaign is being led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, among other leaders.

The leaders are already in Suba South, where they are expected to hold rallies in Nyandiwa and Sindo as part of the Linda Mwananchi campaign.

Authorities are expected to closely monitor the situation as political activities continue in the region.
