President William Ruto has acknowledged failures in his administration’s handling of the 2024 Gen Z protests and the 2025 anniversary demonstrations.

Ruto said no Kenyan should have lost their life during the protests.

He has now ordered investigations into deaths, alleged abductions and claims of excessive use of force by security agencies.

The protests in 2024 and 2025 led to some of the sharpest confrontations between young Kenyans and the government.

Several protesters were killed while many others were injured.

Ruto Changes Tone on Protests

Ruto said Kenyans should not lose their lives, freedom or dignity for criticizing the government or taking part in peaceful demonstration.

“No Kenyan should lose their life, liberty or dignity merely for criticizing the government, expressing an unpopular opinion or participating in peaceful demonstrations,” he said.

The remarks mark a shift from his position during the June 2024 protests.

At the time, Ruto described some protesters as “Treasonous Criminals.”

He also adopted a tough stance during the 2025 anniversary demonstrations.

Some of his remarks were interpreted as supporting the use of force against violent protesters.

President Orders Investigations

During the June 2024 and June 2025 protests, demonstrators were shot and others were allegedly abducted.

Some people were later found dead.

Ruto said he recognizes the pain suffered by families affected by the violence.

He also acknowledged allegations of unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances and excessive use of lethal force.

The President said credible investigations are necessary to establish the truth.

He added that nay human rights violations should be investigated independently, thoroughly and transparently.

Ruto said those found responsible for wrongdoing must be held accountable.
