The Linda Mwananchi movement wants an investigation into the violence that disrupted its Homa Bay tour on Sunday.

The group accused the National Police Service and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) of failing to protect its leaders and supporters.

In a statement issued on Monday, the movement said its convoy met blocked roads and police roadblocks at several points.

The disruptions started near the Kisumu-Homa Bay border. They later spread to the Homa Bay-Migori and Migori-Kisii routes.

Linda Mwananchi also claimed that some police officers worked with groups attacking the convoy.

The movement alleged that armed people hid in bushes along the routes. It said the attackers fired at the convoy.

“This was not crowd chaos. It was an ambush,” the group said.

Group Claims Attack Was Planned

Linda Mwananchi alleged that some attackers travelled from Kisumu, Siaya, Migori, Kisii and Nairobi.

According to the group, they came to Homa Bay to disrupt the tour.

The movement also claimed that its supporters caught a suspect in Nyandiwa. The suspect allegedly identified himself as an NIS officer.

Supporters took the man’s phone during the incident. Linda Mwananchi said it still has the device.

The group further claimed that people who identified themselves as senior police officers later called for the phone.

Linda Mwananchi said it regards the phone as evidence. It plans to consult its lawyers before giving it to investigators or oversight bodies.

Injuries and Deaths Reported

The movement said the violence injured several people and damaged vehicles.

It also reported two deaths from injuries suffered during the clashes.

According to Linda Mwananchi, 18 people received treatment on Sunday. Twelve later travelled to Kisumu for specialist care.

Seven patients had left hospital by Monday. Two had undergone surgery. Another patient had lost a leg, the group said.

Linda Mwananchi said the scale of the violence pointed to careful planning.

The movement argued that attackers needed information about the convoy’s routes and movements. It also claimed they needed resources and political support.

Leaders Asked to Explain

Linda Mwananchi wants Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga to explain what she knew about the violence.

The movement also named Homa Bay Town MP Peter Opondo Kaluma and Kwabwai Ward MCA Richard Ouma Ogindo.

It wants the leaders to state whether they knew about the attacks. It also wants them to explain what they did to stop the violence.

The group asked other Homa Bay leaders linked to the incidents to give their side of the story.

Movement Praises Some Police Officers

Linda Mwananchi stressed that not all police officers took part in the alleged disruption.

The group praised officers in Nyandiwa and Sindo. It said they refused to join efforts to disrupt its rallies.

The movement also thanked hospitals in Homa Bay and Kisumu for treating injured supporters.

It praised politicians and residents who condemned the violence. Suba South MP Millie Odhiambo and Ruth Odinga were among those mentioned.

Linda Mwananchi also thanked journalists who continued reporting from the affected areas.

Calls for Security Agencies to Respond

The movement wants the Inspector General of Police, IPOA and the NIS Director General to explain the actions of their officers.

Linda Mwananchi accused security agencies of failing to stop the violence. It also claimed that some officers may have helped the attackers.

“We hold the National Police Service and the National Intelligence Service accountable for the conduct of their officers,” the statement said.

The group plans to seek accountability through the courts and other legal bodies.

It also vowed to continue its political activities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Linda Mwananchi will not be silenced,” the movement said.

Claims Remain Unverified

The accusations came a day after several Linda Mwananchi leaders made similar claims.

Siaya Governor James Orengo, lawyer Faith Odhiambo and former Embakasi East MP Babu Owino accused government officials and Homa Bay politicians of helping facilitate the violence.

However, no independent evidence has confirmed the allegations.

Linda Mwananchi has also not provided independent evidence linking the named leaders or security agencies to the attacks.
