Dolly Parton, widely regarded as one of America’s most beloved entertainers, died in Nashville on Tuesday, August 25. Her death brought messages celebrating not only her extraordinary musical career but also her generosity, warmth and decades of philanthropic work.

Musician Jack White, who famously covered Doll Parton’s hit “Jolene”, reacted to the news by describing the moment as deserving of “instant sainthood”.

Former President Joe Biden remembered her as an “American original,” highlighting the kindness and respect she showed people throughout her life.

Former President George W. Bush praised Dolly Parton not only as an entertainer but also for her efforts to improve literacy, health and communities.

Tributes also poured in from some of the biggest names in film and music, many remembering Parton as much for her personality as for her talent.

Her Steel Magnolias co-star Julia Roberts described Parton as a joyful and magical person and said knowing her had been a treasured part of her life.

Rapper Eminem also paid tribute, recalling a personal letter Parton sent him after his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He described her as an icon whose influence reached audiences far beyond country music.

Leading figures in the business world joined the tributes. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said he and his wife Lauren Sánchez Bezos were grateful to have known Parton and praised the joy and generosity she brought to others.

Apple CEO Tim Cook remembered her as a gifted songwriter, cultural icon and committed philanthropist whose music helped brighten the world.

Parton leaves behind a legacy stretching far beyond country music. Through songs including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5,” as well as her extensive charitable work, she became one of the most recognizable and admired figures in American popular culture.

Her death marks the end of an extraordinary career, but the music, generosity and optimism that defined her life are likely to continue inspiring generations.
