Officials of the Liberty National Democratic Alliance Party (LINDA) have asserted ownership of the party’s name and identity, warning a faction associated with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna against using them.

The declaration came shortly after the Sifuna-led function challenged a decision that blocked its attempt to register Linda Mwananchi as a political party.

Speaking at the party’s headquarters in Kiambu, LINDA Party leader Phanesio Thuku said the outfit was registered in November 2024 and has established membership across the country, although it is yet to receive a formal registration certificate from the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

LINDA Threatens Legal Action

Thuku accused the Sifuna-led faction of infringing on the party’s identity and warned that LINDA could pursue legal action to protect its name.

He maintained that the party’s name, symbols and other identifiers are legally protected and cannot be adopted by another political organization.

Thuku said LINDA would not allow any individual or group to infringe on its rights or use its identity.

Party officials also sought to distance LINDA from political activities and incidents of violence associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, insisting that the two should not be linked.

Registration Dispute Heads to Tribunal

The controversy comes as the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal prepares to hear a case filed by the Sifuna-led function challenging the decision to block the registration of Linda Mwananchi as a political party.

The tribunal is expected to examine the competing claims surrounding the LINDA name and identity as the registration disputes moves into the legal arena.
