Kamukunji member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan has left the Jubilee Party and joined the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
Hassan was officially welcomed to the party on Tuesday by DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua at the party’s headquarters in Lavington, Nairobi.
The lawmaker, who retained the Kamukunji parliamentary seat on a Jubilee Party ticket during the 2022 General Election, said his decision was driven by the need to associate with a political outfit that promotes integrity and effective leadership.

Hassan Cites Cost of Living and Corruption
Hassan said Kenyans continue to struggle with the high cost of living while raising concerns about corruption in the country.
He said residents of Kamukunji were increasingly frustrated with the country’s political situation and could no longer withstand the pressure brought about by poor leadership.
The MP praised Gachagua as a nationalist committed to the country’s interests and expressed confidence that DCP could form the next government following the elections.
Hassan’s move was backed by other lawmakers who recently joined DCP, including Embakasi West MP Mark Muriithi Mwenje.
Mwenje criticized the leadership of Nairobi, arguing that the capital had suffered from poor governance and that DCP offered an alternative platform capable of driving change.
He added that younger politicians within the party were prepared to mobilize support and campaign for DCP across Nairobi.
Nairobi MPs Back Hassan’s Move
Other Nairobi legislators who supported Hassan’s entry into DCP included Roysambu MP Kamande Mwafrika and Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru.
Both lawmakers were elected to Parliament on United Democratic Alliance (UDA) tickets during the 2022 General Election.
Hassan’s defection adds to the ongoing political realignments as leaders position themselves and their parties ahead of the next General Election.
