Malkia Strikers have called on Kenyans to turn up in large numbers at Kasarani Indoor Arena.

The appeal came after Kenya opened the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship with a convincing win.

Kenya beat Zambia 3-0 on Tuesday evening. The defending champions won the sets 25-14, 25-9 and 25-11.

Head coach Geoffrey Omondi said the home crowd will be important in Kenya’s title defence.

He added that fan support could also boost the team’s push for qualification to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

“Let them continue supporting us. They are our seventh player, like I have said before. We need their support. We are playing at home, and we need to retain this trophy,” Omondi said.

Omondi Targets Improvement in Defence

Despite the strong victory, Omondi said the team still has areas to improve.

He pointed to Kenya’s defence against slower attacks.

According to the coach, Zambia played at a lower pace than expected.

“Our defence for the slower attackers is something we need to work on. The opponents played a bit of a slow game, whereas we trained for a faster game.” he said.

Omondi said the team would work on the weakness ahead of the next match.

Sande Calls for Packed Kasarani Stands

Captain Medina Sande also urged supporters to come out in large numbers.

She said a strong home crowd gives the players extra motivation on the court.

“We are the African champions and we expect a packed house. Please come out in large numbers and support us. It makes the job so much easier on the court,” Sande said.

Sande also praised the balance between young and experienced players in the squad.

She said the younger players bring energy, while senior players provide valuable experince.

Several of the experienced players have featured at World Championships and Olympic Games.

Sande believes the combination gives Kenya a major advantage in the tournament.

Malkia Strikers will next face Mali in Group A.

A win will secure top spot in the group. It will also send Kenya into the quarter-finals with maximum points.
